Next week in Austin, Tex., the South by Southwest festival will honor the winners of a film and television titles competition, a rare move to recognize those miniature stories and graphics displays that surround the opening credits before the real story unfolds.
“We think no one has done it before,” said Janet Pierson, the producer of the film portion of South by Southwest, which begins on Friday and is scheduled to present awards on Tuesday.
Ms. Pierson, speaking by telephone, said she believed no major festival had yet devoted an award to title sequences. It is a minor art that appears to be gaining stature as even the smallest films use increasingly accessible computer graphics techniques, or just pure imagination, to get a movie moving.

Memphis music invades Austin, Texas, again this week for the South By Southwest Music Festival, albeit with a somewhat smaller contingent than last year. With $5 Cover launching last spring, there was enough action for the Memphis Music Foundation to rent a bus to ferry bands down.

A four-day tribute through art, film, music and words to the late Watson Davis, the innovative Malco ad man and ballyhoo specialist known for his elaborate movie promotions and who, in his guise as the ‘horror host’ known as Sivad (on the “Fantastic Features” program from 1962 to 1972 on WHBQ-TV Channel 13), was one of the most influential and beloved Memphis pop-culture heroes of the era, with a popularity that crossed generational and racial lines.
Critics have praised Jennifer Koh as a “high-octane” violinist whose playing “sends the pulse racing.” Her “sizzling articulation” and “rich arsenal of tone” have elicited comparisons to Yehudi Menuhin and Stephane Grappelli, a tribute both to the range of her playing and her adventurous choice of material.
On March 20th, Koh will join the IRIS Orchestra in Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade after Plato’s Symposium, on a program that also includes Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” and Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales. The concert will take place at the Germantown Performing Arts Centre, 1801 Exeter Rd., Germantown, Tenn. 38138. Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Michael Stern describes the program as “three very different composers’ use of the popular, vernacular music of their day to create the music of the future. It’s a perfect program to feature one of the brightest stars of our musical future, Jennifer Koh.”
