UrbanArt Wins Innovation Award from First Tennessee Foundation! Curious Pictures to Light Up Downtown
Curious Pictures, a downtown-centric art installation supported by the Center City Commission, consists of projecting large-scale digital graphics and film vignettes onto 10 selected buildings of significance in Downtown Memphis. These multi-story moving illuminations will bring to life the cityscape and illustrate the possibilities and potential of public art. The project will transform downtown into a temporary interactive art installation where art, architecture and technology collide. The Memphis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects will assist, and Indie Memphis and Film Fuel, a branch of Launch Memphis, will serve as partners to demonstrate Memphis' rising film community.
Ten artists from Memphis and around the world will be featured for the night of Saturday 22 May. Artists and locations shall be announced prior to the night of the show. Due to equipment costs, UrbanArt is currently seeking additional private support in the form of donations to extend the exhibition beyond one night only.

UrbanArt Call-to-Artists for Wolf River Greenway, Phases 2 and 3
Site and Project Descriptions: UrbanArt and the City of Memphis are working together to create public artworks for the first two sections of the Wolf River Greenway to built in 2010. Additional public artworks shall be created as new greenway segments are constructed in future years.
Trail sections 'Phase 2' and 'Phase 3' are to be built along Humphreys Blvd. 'Phase 2' extends from Walnut Grove to Shady Grove, while 'Phase 3' begins at Shady Grove and terminates at Kirby Drive.
Artists will be selected based on previous experience with outdoor sculpture, and are expected to have the technical capabilities to design and install such projects, including providing maintenance instructions. Finished projects must require little to no regular maintenance. The selection committee is interested in artists who have experience with natural materials (wood, stone, metal), as well as vandalism deterring methods and applications. Sites for consideration of the final artwork installation are classified as urban edge/multi-use corridors, and should be based on visibility from trail users, as well as vehicle traffic. Final artwork should compliment the greenway setting, and respond to the distinct character of these districts, which include natural, residential, and commercial areas.
The selection committee will select 3 finalists per phase based on their qualifications, then interview each individually before selecting 1 artist to complete 1 project per project phase.
Budget: $75,000 per section Deadline: 4:00 PM, Friday, May 14, 2010 Eligibility: Regional: open to artists living within a 400-mile radius of Memphis.

Indie Memphis '09 - Best Hometowner Feature The Conversion June 12, 2009, the day America ushers in a bright new future, or is it? The government mandate to convert analog television signals to digital promised to be a smooth transition, however, something went wrong. America plunges into digital chaos as television, radio and internet fall silent. Is it a fluke or an attack? The government is hush as conspiracy abounds and the truth hides within tiny ones and zeros.
Cigarette Girl It's 2035 and smokers are demonized for their dirty habits, forced into a ghetto known simply as the Smoking Section where mainstream non-smoking society hopes its nicotine addicted inhabitants will simply vanish. Put simply: it's not the place you want to be walking through at night. In this Smoking Section, "Cigarette Girl" spends her days selling smokes at under market much to the chagrin of the Vice Lord who runs the Smoking Section. Then Cigarette Girl's grandmother contracts emphysema and Cigarette Girl decides to kick the habit. After three days of cold turkey Cigarette Girl has to kill for a smoke - or be killed in the Smoking Section.
Pure "smokesploitation," Cigarette Girl mixes misfit social commentary with beautiful babes and bad boys, guns and glamour, and lots of cigarettes, all shot with the feel of a classic drive-in grindhouse roughie. McCarthy's works include the crowd pleasing Sore Losers and Teenage Tupelo, regarded as a classic of the underground-into-indie film scene of the '90s.
