America's military personnel are a very talented bunch, as capable of building a school or providing aid to people affected by disaster as they are of fending off an insurgent attack. But Memphians will get to see their fighting men and women's less combative gifts when 22 of America's finest trade their field radios for microphones to bring the U.S. Soldier Show to The Cannon Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday night. |

On Sunday, Swiss-born pianist Alex Bugnon headlines Jazz Fest 2010 at the Levitt Shell in Overton Park, but it is the memory of another recent festival appearance that has him still buzzing months later. In July, Bugnon returned to his hometown of Montreux, Switzerland, to assume his new role as the emcee of that city's world-famous jazz festival. |

Playhouse on the Square has more than a few things in common with Chicago's famed Steppenwolf Theatre Company. For one, the same architect designed the two theaters and their spaces are similar. They also share an affinity for Tulsa-born playwright Tracy Letts, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer of "August: Osage County," an epic three-act Broadway play that is packed with more family dysfunction than a touring gospel musical. |

A funny thing happened when Michael Longoria joined the original cast of the Broadway smash musical "Jersey Boys" in 2005. Like most of his co-stars, Longoria had lived a typical "gypsy arts lifestyle," bouncing from project to project, rarely working with the same people twice in a row. But in starring in the hit musical about Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, Longoria found his life mirroring his art. |

When an event has been around for 36 years, it pretty much qualifies to be an institution. And so it is with WLOK's Stone Soul Picnic, Memphis' longest-running outdoor festival and a perennial gospel-loving, family-friendly occasion. The core is Saturday's performance extravaganza from 1 to 9:30 p.m. at Tom Lee Park. In past years, the picnic has brought such luminaries as Johnnie Taylor, Shirley Caesar and Al Green. |

With its darkly atmospheric guitar work and evocative lyrics, the music of '70s chart mainstays Blue Öyster Cult, which headlines Friday's opening of the Delta Fair & Music Festival, has always had a cinematic quality. And over the years, the band has contributed songs to a number of soundtracks, most memorably the 1981 animated science-fiction cult classic "Heavy Metal," as well as video games such as Ripper and Guitar Hero. |

"The Grace Card," a locally made film that is a client of the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission, has announced a distribution deal that takes the movie nationwide next February.
It will be released in theaters nationwide on Feb. 25 via an arrangement with Sony companies Provident Films and Affirm Films, and distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films. DVD and Blu-ray releases are expected to follow later in 2011.
"The Grace Card" filmed in Memphis last year. There were 20 paid local crew members and one paid local cast member. Some $217,020.05 in production money was spent in the area.
The Commission was instrumental in assisting with location ideas and contacts, crew and services. There was additional coordination with the Memphis Police Department for permission to have the characters portray officers in the film. The project was part of the Memphis & Shelby County Wage Refund Program.

Promising rom-com Going the Distance pulls up short.
by Chris Herrington
Going the Distance is based on a premise that is rich with possibility: a romantic comedy rooted in how the confluence of modern employment mobility and an economic downturn can wreak havoc on love lives, particularly among the young and unsettled. Drew Barrymore — who has grown more fetching and likable with age (see: Music and Lyrics, Lucky You) — is Erin, a journalism grad student still trying to finesse internships into job offers at 31.…

English neo-soul singer Corinne Bailey Rae broke through in 2006 with her seductive, Norah Jones-ish hit "Put Your Records On" and a multi-platinum eponymous debut album. Four years later, Rae's followup, The Sea, doesn't boast a similar sure shot but is probably a stronger, more diverse album.…

Miranda Lambert straddles country’s alternative/mainstream divide.
by Chris Herrington
In the fall of 2008, more than a year after a sophomore disc that ended up being the decade's finest country album and exactly a year before a third album that cemented her as a career artist, Miranda Lambert graced the cover of Garden & Gun magazine. An eastern answer to The Oxford American — only both more high-toned and less academic — Garden & Gun takes as its subtitle subject "The Soul of the New South," and Lambert was the chosen cover girl for its "Best of the New South" issue.…

Superior Donuts is a dark comedy about starting over.
by Chris Davis
Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain —
All, all the stretch of these great green states — And make America again!…

Created in the shadow of the Deepwater Horizon explosion and what has been described as the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, the "Horn Island 26" exhibition at Memphis College of Art is more somber than its predecessors. "We were really concerned about whether we were going to make this trip," said MCA faculty member and expedition leader Don DuMont. |
